False Memory #2 False Sight

Normal can be so overrated..... Presenting False Memory #2 False Sight by Dan Krokos.

Here is the summary of the book:

All Miranda wants is a normal life. She's determined to move past the horrible truth of her origin as a clone so she can enjoy time with her boyfriend, Peter, and the rest of her friends at school. But Miranda quickly learns that there's no such thing as normal - not for a girl who was raised to be a weapon. When one of her teammates turns rogue, it begins a war that puts the world in jeopardy. Now Miranda must follow her instincts - not her heart - in order to save everything she's fought so hard to keep. with the image of a terrible future seared into her mind, what will she have to sacrifice to protect the people she loves?

Dan Krokos's sequel to the tour de force False Memory is a mind-blowing thriller with high-octane action that will leave readers begging for the final book in this bold and powerful trilogy.

Normal is definitely very much overrated. Its when your extraordinary that matters. As such Miranda found out in False Memory, that she is a part of an elite genetically altered group of teenagers bread to be the perfect and the most powerful soldiers on the planet. And if you thought that book 1 with its high end graphic sci-fi action was hair-raising and ambitious...... think again......

Because Dan Krokos takes it all a step further with sequel 'False Sight'. Truths are revealed. The battle ground much bigger than what our heroes had anticipated. Higher graphic and even more action-packed. Time travel. Alternate Dimension. Dystopia. Post-Apocalyptic..... Mr. Krokos sure is pulling all the stops with False Sight. Miranda may have wanted to lead a quite and normal life with her boyfriend Peter and friend Rhys and Noah but that doesn't seem to be happening anytime soon when the fate of the worlds across time and space are at risk.......

Came as a surprise False Sight did.... If False Memory gave you the power kick into action then this one is able enough to give you the supreme power sending you across through the black to worlds unimaginable just like a time lord with his blue police box get up to everyday....

False Memory #1 False Memory

Ambitious and fresh..... Presenting False Memory #1 False Memory by Dan Krokos.

Here is the summary of the book:

Miranda wakes up alone on a park bench with no memory. In her panic, she releases a mysterious energy that incites pure terror in everyone around her. Except Peter, a boy who isn’t at all surprised by Miranda’s shocking ability.

Left with no choice but to trust this stranger, Miranda discovers she was trained to be a weapon and is part of an elite force of genetically-altered teens who possess flawless combat skills and powers strong enough to destroy a city. But adjusting to her old life isn’t easy—especially with Noah, the boyfriend she can’t remember loving.

Then Miranda uncovers a dark truth that sets her team on the run. Suddenly her past doesn’t seem to matter... when there may not be a future.

Dan Krokos’ debut is a tour-de-force of non-stop action that will leave readers begging for the next book in this bold and powerful new series.

You wake up one day and you don't know who you are, where you at, and why you can't remember what got you to this place. This is what starts Dan Krokos' exciting story with Miranda waking up on a park bench with forgotten memories...... but that's not right, she seems to somehow be able to create mass chaos and that boy Peter maybe her only source to get the information she wants...... which maybe detrimental not only for her but for mankind as well.

Miranda, Peter, Noah and Olive form a team of the perfect soldiers. Albeit them being teenagers, they are biologically created killing weapons created for one purpose and one purpose only .... world domination. Equipped with the ability to cause mass panic and hysteria and the various forms of fighting techniques integrated in them since conception..... they must take timely shots that helps them retain their memories as their brain processes things much faster than normal....... shocked? Well not quite I suppose because it is our heroes who get a nasty shock when they find out what is going on around them.....

I'll keep it short. Dan Krokos packs a punch with this book. There is so much going on here that it is virtually impossible to put everything in words. But I must point a certain few things out. Good world building. Strong characters. A well worth plot. The highly charging thriller and sci-fi and all those twists & turns while may make the book a bit predictable but the author manages to leave his mark with us.

Not to forget, there is some tingly and goosebumps inducing romance in here and I personally am rooting for Miranda and Peter all the way. She is one kickass heroine who almost carries the weight of the plot on her shoulders but not to worry Peter, Noah and Olive are there to help loosen some of it.

False Memory, truly packs the much needed punch. An unputdownable book. Commendation need to be given to the author. I loved the concept, the way it is presented, the action..... oh I loved everything about it and i loved the next one even more (I got the e-arc from netgalley).

Newsoul #2 Asunder

As hard as reviewing the first book but as great as the first book was..... even better. Presenting Newsoul #2 Asunder by Jodi Meadows.

Here is the summary of the book:

DARKSOULS
Ana has always been the only one. Asunder. Apart. But after Templedark, when many residents of Heart were lost forever, some hold Ana responsible for the darksouls–and the newsouls who may be born in their place.

SHADOWS
Many are afraid of Ana’s presence, a constant reminder of unstoppable changes and the unknown. When sylph begin behaving differently toward her and people turn violent, Ana must learn to stand up not only for herself but for those who cannot stand up for themselves.

LOVE
Ana was told that nosouls can’t love. But newsouls? More than anything, she wants to live and love as an equal among the citizens of Heart, but even when Sam professes his deepest feelings, it seems impossible to overcome a lifetime of rejection.

In this second book in the Newsoul trilogy, Ana discovers the truth about reincarnation and will have to find a way to embrace love and make her young life meaningful. Once again, Jodi Meadows explores the extraordinary beauty and shadowed depths of the soul in a story equal parts epic romance and captivating fantasy.

Reincarnation had always been a topic that had eluded the best of the best. Nothing is ever concrete about a subject as elusive as this. There are no know-hows when it comes to phenomenon such as these...... But Jodi Meadows brought before us this miraculous event in all its glory saddled with fantasy and sci-fi dystopia in the form of the deliciously exotic first book of the Newsoul series, Incarnate last year.... Again following the same route with the equally exotic book 2, Asunder.

Asunder, now what does this even mean. It means - Apart, divided, into pieces..... Yup kinda sums up what is going on in Heart at the moment. In Incarnate, we saw Ana braving the mean world around her. the city of heart is almost getting used to the newsoul now (aka Ana). She herself is slowly learning to let go of her fears and insecurities, finally in the open with Sam..... but the bad is just around the corner.

Templedark was the reason a lot of old souls were lost indicating the coming birth of a lot of newsouls to replace them. Ana is finally not the only one there. But negative elements within heart pose a grave danger to the existence of these newsouls. The revered entity Janan himself poses the greatest threat imaginable, his motives unsavory. All the while Ana is on a journey of her own to find out the reason of her existence.

Ana and Sam.... What a powerful feeling love is. Our protagonist. Oh they just are truly and utterly in love and made for each other. Ana has come pretty far with this book, she's much stronger now. Fighting against the tough mean world to carve a niche for yourself tends to make you grow a tough skin doesn't it. She struggles to find her worth but there is one thing certain about her. She is loyal.

Sam. Dossam. Whatever we call him, one thing is for certain about him. He is patient as a saint. Reborn with every life, Sam is the perfect guy, with the perfect flaws. You would expect a guy who is a reincarnated soul be perfect in everyway.... but not Meadows' Sam. He is as human as they come. And relatively very young in this life too. Their is an intensity in him whenever he is with Ana and it shows through with the author's perfect penmanship too.... Sam & Ana..... Ana & Sam *blushes profusely*

Asunder had some pretty tough shoes to fill out on, what with the high level of plot structure present in Incarnate but it is safe to say that book 2 doesn't fall short of our expectations at all. And thank God - No second book syndrome at all. Strong characters, a strong plot, and the right twist & turns to keep us readers on ours toes. And that cover doesn't hurt too..... Perfection..... bravo Jodi Meadows...... Brava...... "Infinite" would just be the perfect icing to finish this off.

"Extraordinarily intricate and beautiful, Asunder goes into the depths of the epic fantasy of re-incarnations"

Theodore Boone #4 The Activist

Presenting Theodore Boone #4 The Activist by John Grisham.

Here is the summary of the book:

Though he's only thirteen, Theodore Boone has spent more time in the courtroom than almost anywhere else, and there's always a new adventure waiting. After having been falsely accused of vandalism and theft, Theo is happy to finally be out of the hot seat, once more dispensing legal advice to friends and community members, when an exciting new case demands his urgent attention.

This is my first John Grisham book..... Sadly that's true I have to catch up with a lot of good books and authors in the markets...... But this is also the fourth book in the YA Theodore Boone series. Thank God! All the books don't need to be read as series.

I'm still not sure what I feel about this series since this is the fourth book but i'd say this though. I liked the straightforward and simply way the story is told and the characters playing their parts. Theo as well written as the protagonist and keeping him well within the constrains of his age and not making him a hi-fi genius. Grisham keeps the tone of the plot simple as it is targeted to the young audience putting in well explained examples to educate us about the role of an activist.

While I must say, Law is one subject that had always rushed over my head when we had it on one of my semesters at college (it was mandatory to the course). Still the subject of "Eminent Domain" and the "Animal Court" play a major part in this book.

I'm still not sure what I feel for this book since Grisham is known for his adult court room thrillers even more but the Theodore Boone series is definitely well made for the younger audience with concrete examples to educate them (as I mentioned above). There is a well placed satire in this against government - because as one of the characters rightly say, they may be big, rich, powerful and strong enough but it is not in their right to take land from the citizens..... Well Done!!

The Chronicles of Light and Shadow #2 A Clockwork Heart

A good but a bit disappointing second book...... Presenting The Chronicles of Light & Shadow #2 A Clockwork Heart by Liesel Schwarz.

Here is the summary of the book:

FOR BETTER OR CURSE. That might as well have been the wedding vow of Elle Chance and her new husband, the ex-Warlock Hugh Marsh in the second book of this edgy new series that transforms elements of urban fantasy, historical adventure, and paranormal romance into storytelling magic.

As Elle devotes herself to her duties as the Oracle—who alone has the power to keep the dark designs of Shadow at bay—Marsh finds himself missing the excitement of his former life as a Warlock. So when Commissioner Willoughby of the London Metropolitan police seeks his help in solving a magical mystery, Marsh is only too happy to oblige. But in doing so, Marsh loses his heart . . . literally.

In place of the flesh-and-blood organ is a clockwork device—a device that makes Marsh a kind of zombie. Nor is he the only one. A plague of clockwork zombies is afflicting London, sowing panic and whispers of revolution. Now Elle must join forces with her husband’s old friend, the Nightwalker Loisa Beladodia, to track down Marsh’s heart and restore it to his chest before time runs out.

Suffering from large bouts of the second book syndrome, while it may have its good bits in there but it is not as strong as the first book was in terms of character development and plot goes. A Clockwork heart at best is an okayish book. Don't get me wrong i'm not discouraging anybody from reading it but the level prevalent in "A Conspiracy of Alchemist" is absent with this book.

Elle Marsh are married now and its already falling apart. She wants to fly but her husband wants her to spend at least a bit more time with him and she finds all these new restrictions suffocating. Alright it is understandable that such big changes might take some time to incorporate at first but she can't seem to want to all. Come on your husband gave up his warlock powers and place on the council to be with you and you can't even give him a bit more of your time?

That is just plain irresponsible. Another thing she seems to be following the principle of "Ignorance is bliss". On top of not performing her duties to her husband, she seems to be ignoring her Oracle powers as well. Rather that figuring out the solution to her problems, she turns a blind eye to the oncoming storm and looses her husband to a clockwork heart.

While it is clear that separating Elle and Marsh is a plot point for this series but it doesn't mean I have to like it. And its rather weak and rushed when you finish the book..... And it all takes Elle to loose her love to know his worth. Rather big character deterioration happening in this book if you will....... Still the only saving grace here was the supernatural battle at the end of the book......

There is a significant lack of world building as well. Liesel Schwarz I hope you give something much better in "Sky Pirates" because i'm definitely checking it out. With the hope that you will have an even better and stronger in it than this book.

The Clann #3 Consume

Lives up to its title.... Presenting The Clann #3 Consume by Melissa Darnell.

Here is the summary of the book:

Tristan Coleman has survived the change from Clann magic user to vampire, much to Savannah Colbert's joy—and despair. By changing the Clann's golden boy and newly elected leader, even to save him from death, she has unleashed a fury of hatred and fear that they cannot escape.

As the Clann and the vampire council go to war, Tristan and Sav face a new threat—a fracturing of the all-consuming bond they share. To fight for peace, they must forge a new trust and risk everything to take down their deadliest enemy, even as they must run for their lives. Soon they will learn that some bonds are stronger than love—and some battles cannot be won without sacrifice.

Melissa Darnell made us "Crave" this story, "Covet" Sav and Tristan's romance and "Consume" it like an addict to drugs. the moment we dread in a series is here, the final book..... What began with sweet and shocking discoveries in Crave, ends with the romp of guns and roses in Consume.

Covet saw Savannah Colbert turning Tristan Coleman into a vampire as a last ditch effort to save him. And now it all over the place. Savannah sired him but now Tristan is a vampire. Its hard enough for her to cope with what had happened in the last book but keeping things in is even more of a problem, now that he can read her mind. Add to that the deception, the chase, the bloodlust and that of the reveal of shocking truths and the eminent build upto the final confrontation really topped it off.

Savannah and Tristan really shone through if it was possible to get them more stronger as characters than they already were. Savannah became the voice of reason to Tristan's rash decisions. She has dealt with from people enough to know what revenge is never the answer because once you have accomplished what you set out to do to tend to loose your way if you don't have anything to fall back o. Something that Tristan doesn't want to understand.

Tristan's situation is understandable. The Clann had given him enough grief as it is. But things happen that set him off even more. He wants to hurt the perpetrators because the disaster happened because some people wanted power. And its not just our power couple but our secondary characters too had their moments in there, enough for them to leave an impression upon us of their characteristics that set them apart.

The romance factor sure makes the swoon worthy moments. Savannah and Tristan truly are made for each other and them braving the tension and dangers of the coming war between vampires and witches and coming out stronger is testament to their love..... the fact cemented by Darnell's exemplary plot line. Such strong sentiments, writing and the buildup to the climax is definitely worth the wait.... Can't wait to known it when it comes out.... Also an adult novella based in the Clann world released last June named "Dance with Darkness" hope I can get it soon.

Paper gods #0.5 Shadow

Presenting Paper Gods #0.5 Shadow by Amanda Sun.

Here is the summary of the book:

Meet two teens whose worlds are about to change forever in this paranormal Young Adult novella, a prequel to Ink by debut author Amanda Sun…

Katie Greene’s worst nightmare comes true when her mother dies, and she’s devastated to learn that she will have to leave the only home she’s ever known. Desperate to find where she belongs, she must decide if she has what it takes to start a new life across the ocean.

For Yuu Tomohiro, every day is a nightmare. He struggles to control his strange ability, and keeps everyone at a distance so they won’t get hurt—even his girlfriend, Myu. At night, a shadow haunts his dreams, and a mysterious woman torments him with omens of death and destruction. But these haunting premonitions are only the beginning…

Shadow comes before INK in order. Alternating between Tomo-kun and Katie's point of views, a chapter each setting the stage to INK, the first book to the Paper Gods series. Sort of like a filler story with the events relating to and what happened after Katie's mother died and what made her decide to finally go to Japan to live with her Aunt Diane.

With Tomohiko, the shadows are ever circling him, his Kami blood needing out. His side of the tale pertains to his breakup with Myu, an act of sacrifice he performs in order to keep her safe from his demons. And the events of INK that lead to Katie and Tomo's first meeting. The author keeps it simple and basic but interesting enough for those who begin with this novella and then move onto the first book.

The Aether Chronicles #2 Charmed Vengeance

This is an early review...... Innocent Darkness was just the beginning ..... and I will try to keep this spoiler free too if I can. Presenting The Aether Chronicles #2 Charmed Vengeance by Suzanne Lazear.

Here is the summary of the book:

In the Faerie realm, Noli Braddock's relationship with her best friend V has grown into something more. But V's mother, Faerie Queen Tiana, has ruled that they are forbidden to see each other. Returning to the mortal realm, Noli joins the crew of her brother's air-pirate ship, the Vixen's Revenge. There she discovers that her brother has hired the scallywag Faerie huntsman, Kevighn Silver. While serving as shipmates, Kevighn and Noli learn that the Earth Court King plans to find a forbidden artifact--one that will bring destruction to everyone Noli loves.

Innocent Darkness was a fantastic Steampunky-Supernatural introduction to Lazear's imagination of the faery.... Charmed Vengeance on the other hand is the road map, the stage preparation for the next book (whatever it is called).

Essentially the book diverges into three separate journeys or stories, if you would call it. Noli, V & James, and Kevighn Silver-Tongue. They all deal with the consequences of their actions in the first book.... kinda like Newton's third law of motion . Noli fights to keep the foreground against the Sprite that resides in her. V or Steven or Stiofan, at the behest of the High Queen is forced to break his bond to Noli (the command itself is enough for us to want to hurt the Queen) and sent on a quest with James to find an unusual amusement for her. And Kevighn in the human realm after being exiled from Faery.

Noli, still the society rebel now joins her brother aboard the Vixen's Revenge as an engineer, be as far from home as possible while nursing a broken heart. But with faith enough in her love for V to know that this is just temporary before her finds a way for them to be together again. Charmed Vengeance had another plus point in the mix a lot of us complained with the short us of the steampunk mecha and the visibility of the elements that made steampunk what they are..... Rejoice for we finally get our wish, as the author explores the Steampunky side of her universe aboard the Vixen's Revenge and on solid grounds.

Also, the presence of the Sprite inside Noli gives us a rare view into her mind as she struggles with her twn personality for control. And what began as separate journey converges together at the end, where they find out exactly what is brewing in the land of the Faery at the moment.... Oh ! I am so ending my tirade abruptly because I definitely don't think i can contain it any longer and it would all come out spoiling it for you all.

Suzanne Lazear did a good job with this one. As I already explained, this book is but the bridge that we need to cross that connects Innocent Darkness to the bigger happening of the future. the plot and the way of presentation just like the first book is easy enough to understand and creative enough to keep out thoughts and imagination going like a hyperdrive accelerator (sorry couldn't resist using a futuristic ref. here). The author maintained the dynamics between the characters and i'm definitely happy that the idea of a love triangle remains just an idea and nothing else..... there is a big supernatural confrontation coming in, if Noli's vow at the end of the book is to be maintained..... and might I say i'm already excited for what it would mean for us reader and the characters.

WOOL Omnibus (Silo #1) (Wool #1 - #5)

A classic post-apocalyptic dystopia..... and the title definitely does not relate to art & craft at all. Presenting Wool Omnibus #1-5 by Hugh Howey.

Here is the summary of the book:

An epic story of survival at all odds and one of the most anticipated books of the year.
In a ruined and hostile landscape, in a future few have been unlucky enough to survive, a community exists in a giant underground silo.

Inside, men and women live an enclosed life full of rules and regulations, of secrets and lies.

To live, you must follow the rules. But some don't. These are the dangerous ones; these are the people who dare to hope and dream, and who infect others with their optimism.

Their punishment is simple and deadly. They are allowed outside.

Jules is one of these people. She may well be the last.

Released as ebooks first, WOOL Omnibus is the collection of first 5 books of Hugh Howey's WOOL series. Within it contain the 5 books - WOOL, Proper Gauge, Casting Off, The Stranded & The Unraveling, a short introduction to the next book in the series, Shift and an interactive interview with the author.

As far as Dystopias and Post-Apocalyptic genres go, this is a pretty straightforward story and very less sci-fi element focusing more on the Dystopia which I very much appreciated. Choosing to focus more on the people living in the stifling spaces and closed areas and how they deal with things. Choosing to let go of certain ideas giving rise to optimism, of hope of a better future outside and instead have such notion be tabooed least they give rise to discord and unrest among the people. The proverbial wool hiding the truth in plain sight because if found out, the punishment is to be sent outside.

While I love dystopia and this is very much basic, I would liked it more if the author didn't dwell so much on the character point of views, going deep in thoughts all the time. I liked Jules and Lukas though. Jules is resourceful, brilliant, knows to say piece and the quality to lead. I liked her defiant attitude to not follow the rules..... blazing her own path. Going onto discover that there is more to live than inside the Silo. Lukas being the love interest to Jules was likeable enough. He had a rather sweet and eccentric disposition. He tries to help her with as much as he can within the constrains of his limits and I just check out the next volume, Shift.
