Shadowlands #1 Shadowlands

A gorgeous cover and a mysterious thriller...... Pretty good. Presenting Shadowlands #1 Shadowlands by Kate Brian.

Here is the summary of the book:

Rory Miller had one chance to fight back and she took it. Rory survived and the serial killer who attacked her escaped. Now that the infamous Steven Nell is on the loose, Rory must enter the witness protection program. Entering the program alongside her, is her father and sister Darcy. The trio starts a new life and a new beginning leaving their friends and family behind without a goodbye.

Starting over in a new town with only each other is unimaginable for Rory and Darcy. They were inseparable as children but now they can barely stand each other. As the sisters settle in to Juniper Landing, a picturesque vacation island, it seems like their new home may be just the fresh start they need. They fall in with a group of beautiful, carefree teens and spend their days surfing, partying on the beach, and hiking into endless sunsets. Just as they’re starting to feel safe again, one of their new friends goes missing. Is it a coincidence? Or is the nightmare beginning all over again?

A gorgeous cover and that title 'Shadowlands' is enough to send your hairs raising with that suspicious feeling. This is a YA with thriller, with a big mystery, and a killer on the loose..... And not to forget the start of new love.... A healthy combination for a good read.

This is the story of Rory Miller, a normal teenage girl with an almost normal semblance of life. But misfortune for her, she catches the eye of a serial killer and manages to escape. A chance to fight back is presented and she takes it along with her father & sister. Entering the witness protection act, the Millers start a new life with a new name and a story.

The new town, Juniper Landing maybe the fresh start they all need to start over while waiting for that one news. But Juniper Landing proves to have its perks and quirks too. New friends, new environment, surfing, hiking, partying.... and maybe new love...... But Rory soon realizes these nit-bit mysteries about the island and the locals. Why do some of the locals sports weird leather bracelets, just what is the deal with that fog and why is the party crowd seem intent on her instead of the out going girl like her sister Darcy.

Shadowlands, while we actually learn the meaning of this name in the sequel 'Hereafter' (I'm writing this review after reading it) but it was still an amazing and a rather fast read. I finished it in one sitting. Just couldn't keep down the curiosity. Brian really doesn't give is much room to breathe in and keeps the secrets tight and reveals them at surprising points you could hardly have anticipated..... Her way of presenting the chapters is also commendable (does hold parallels to Kimberly Derting's The Body Finder series), keeping alternate chapters each in the antagonist (the serial killer Steven Nell).... even that tone is enough to creep us out and pray for the safety of the poor soul.

This is deliciously thrilling and suspense-fully creepy. Raises a lot  of questions though, hopefully answered in the future sequels...... Plus the twist & turns and their brilliant placement are enough for you to sit tight and finish it in one go...... And that cliffhanger...... GOD that cliffhanger....

"A YA suspense/thriller tale, tantalizing with the creepy and the mind blowing twist & turns...... I HIGHLY RECOMMEND"
