The Morganville Vampires Vol 1

Vampires...... the old school kind. Presenting The Morganville Vampires Vol 1 (#1 & 2) by Rachel Caine.

Here is the summary of the book:

In Rachel Caine's town of Morganville, "there's always a surprise just around every dark corner" - and it usually involves the undead. Now these secrets come to light in the first two books of the Morganville Vampires series, together in one volume.

GLASS HOUSES

Morganville is a small college town in the heart of Texas that has its share of quirky characters - and some evil ones too. When student Claire Danvers moves off campus into one of Morganville's oldest houses, she finds that her roommates don't show many signs of life. But they'll have Claire's back when the town's deepest secrets come crawling out, hungry for fresh blood.

THE DEAD GIRLS' DANCE

Claire Danvers has her share of challenges - like living among creatures of the night. On the upside, she has a great roommate (who tends to disappear at sunup) and a new boyfriend. Now a fraternity is throwing its annual Dead Girls' Dance and - surprise! - Claire and her equally outcast friend have been invited. When they find out why, all hell breaks loose, because this time both the living and the dead are ready to tear up the night.

Vampires.... this particular fanged genre has since then come a long way. From Stoker's Dracula, to Kagawa's Blood of Eden..... and the Salvatores and the originals of L.J. Smith still holding true (notice i'm not mentioning anything of the sparkly fanged ones.... god that one was a disaster). Needless to say vampires have come a long way from being the bad ones sucking out the blood off pretty girls, to good people with supernatural powers and then becoming the sole species of a post-apocalyptic era.... Definitely a long way.

So returning to the root as a reader of this particular genre is in itself both nostalgia and pretty weird. And this is how I found myself with the book.... this was a giveaway prize alongwith some others and somehow it got kept being put off in light of finishing other arcs that needed reviewing before due date.... anyway i'm rambling..... here we are then......

This is a volume book..... meaning this one contains not one but 2 books, the first two books of the unnaturally long Morganville Vampires series - GLASS HOUSES and THE DEAD GIRLS' DANCE.

Not overtly amazing, this is the story of Claire Danvers who unfortunately gets carted off to Morganville, Texas because her parents just don't want her to go a long way from home...... but instead to vampire central..... not that they know it.... This is Claire's story as she boards with Michael, Eve and Shane at the Glass House and plays her own part in the town both run and governed by vampires. And the incidents happening in both Glass Houses and Dead Girls' Dance is just enough to point to a town ripe for ravaging.

So as the stats of the things go - Michael, the mysterious owner of the Glass House and Eve, the goth girl are paired off, just like Claire and Shane, the handsome slacker.... In a way both pairing had an almost nill chemistry... I said almost' - and the plot felt a little lame..... But got to say this was a fast read but I still wasn't very impressed..... It served for a good time pass though......

"Two books rolled into one - Morganville Vampires Vol 1 is a nostalgic throwback to the clasic vampire genre for me (since i'm beginning it now)"

  1. I kept debating about this series as well for some reason. The storyline didn't really grab me nor did the first few chapter freebies floating around. But it's been very long running. Guess it's doing something right! But with all my other reads I doubt this one will make it to my TBR pile.

I still love the author's adult books though! Nice review!

  2. Great review! I have this first volume and the 2nd one I think. I picked them up at Half-price books. I just never got back to reading them lol. I dunno, the whole YA vampire scene has be pretty bored.
