Pretty Deadly Reviews: Harry Potter Read - A - Long #3

Now the next two week for re-reading Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets as part of the Harry Potter Read - A Long hosted by Pretty Deadly Reviews - again the brilliant feeling and the nostalgia returns.

Question of the book -

Q: if you could drink Polyjuice Potion and turn into anyone, living, dead, or even fictional, who would it be?

A: A very tricky question this one. If I ever drink that yucky potion (if ever) then well i'd be sure to add a bit of hair of the gorgeous Jennifer Lawrence. Come on that girl is getting it all - Mystique (from the X-men : First Class) and now Katniss Everdeen (eagerly awaited The Hunger Games movie). Not only did she make me love Mystique but Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games is my favourite, and not only that but also she's getting Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson as co-stars there (but yes I LOVE PEETA).

But if i get a choice i'd want to add Hermione Granger's hair and would like to turn into her....well i'd dig to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and get that wand too and fly on those racing brooms and spend my time in that huge library.

The Iron Fey #1.5: Winter's Passage

Short and to the point. I present before you all, an interim scene between The Iron King and The Iron Daughter, Winter's Passage.

Here is the summary of the scene:

Meghan Chase used to be an ordinary girl...until she discovered that she is really a faery princess. After escaping from the clutches of the deadly Iron fey, Meghan must follow through on her promise to return to the equally dangerous Winter Court with her forbidden love, Prince Ash. But first, Meghan has one request: that they visit Puck--Meghan's best friend and servant of her father, King Oberon--who was gravely injured defending Meghan from the Iron Fey. Yet Meghan and Ash's detour does not go unnoticed. They have caught the attention of an ancient, powerful hunter--a foe that even Ash may not be able to defeat.... An eBook exclusive story from Julie Kagawa's Iron Fey series.

Meghan by the end of 'The Iron King' has defeated King Machina and had got her brother back. But she must now honor the end of the deal she had made with the gorgeous winter Prince, Ash.

This scene serves as the account of their journey to the Unseelie Court. And its not a bed of roses. Meghan wants a slight detour from this final departure of sorts - she wants to visit Puck. But this detour does not get unnoticed by an ancient hunter. A hunter who neither belongs to the Seelie or the Unseelie Court. How would Meghan and Ash evade being deleted by his ferocious being?

Winter's Passage is the goods. Every page spews of the anticipation that something is about to happen. Every turn of event speaks of coming horrors. A short scene but Julie Kagawa has out done herself. You'll be surprised - Winter's Passage is really good.

The Iron Fey #1: The Iron King

This one has been pilling up for sometime and good enough that it delivers everything it says it would. Lets hear it for Julie Kagawa's The Iron Fey #1 The Iron King.

Here is the summary of the book:

Meghan Chase has a secret destiny; one she could never have imagined. Something has always felt slightly off in Meghan's life, ever since her father disappeared before her eyes when she was six. She has never quite fit in at school or at home. When a dark stranger begins watching her from afar, and her prankster best friend becomes strangely protective of her, Meghan senses that everything she's known is about to change. But she could never have guessed the truth - that she is the daughter of a mythical faery king and is a pawn in a deadly war. Now Meghan will learn just how far she'll go to save someone she cares about, to stop a mysterious evil no faery creature dare face; and to find love with a young prince who might rather see her dead than let her touch his icy heart.

As the vampires and dystopia, the fae seem to be in vogue in the YA book scene. Although I love all things magical but the iron king would be the first book I have read that is of the YA genre. Literary I have come as far as the Shakespeare's 'Midsummer Night's Dream' to the fae lore.

It starts of like this - its Meghan's 16th birthday and definitely nothing can go wrong in her mundane day-to-day life as she like every other highschooler hustles with school with her best friend - well protective best friend Robbie Goodfell to be exact. So its her birthday and like every other day of her life her birthday is nothing different. Even her best friend who is the only one who remembers the day can't repair the dullness of it all. But maybe something is going on and why is she seeing such strange things these days? Well when her younger brother Ethan is kidnapped and replaced by a changeling - a creed of faerie known to be violent - Meghan wants answers. Robbie Goodfell is the one to take charge and he explains the deal about the fae world and that he is King Oberon, the lord of the Seelie (Summer) Court and that Meghan is co-incidentally the only living off-spring of the King of the Summer court - well half-blood.

So with Puck leading the way Meghan enters the Nevernever to only get her brother back. But to her surprise Nevernever is definitely not as the fairytales proclaim them to be. Its tricky, its dangerous and definitely not a place to go joyriding. Aside from being cautious Meghan must be aware of what she says and what she does - for if not careful then by the time she finds her brother she'd be under heavy burden of debts - well nevernever does work on debts doesn't it? Enter Ash, the youngest prince of the Unseelie (Winter) Court. Gorgeous and handsome. Hails from a land frozen in show as the heart is. While his character is enough to give someone a whiplash but Meghan seems to be drawn in to him. And Grimalkin, the mysterious talking cat who is as sharp-witted and cat like as ever.

With the help of Puck, the winter prince and the cat Meghan must navigate the customs and traditions of this unknown land and find her brother before it is too late.

First of all i'd like to say The Iron King delivers the goods. Not only is the Fae lore present in its elements as the beliefs have it without changing the details at all. Second Grimalkin - well i'm not well versed with what the books say about him but he strongly reminded me of the Cheshire cat....yes a strong resemblance to Alice in Wonderland and not to forget Midsummer Night's Dream and Peter Pan too. The plot is intriguing enough. And a lot of twists and turns that will make you sit on the edge of your seats throughout and mystical enough to fill in the quota of like minded Fantasy lovers.

Well a tale this magical tale is never enough without a romantic ark. So yes we have the burgeoning relationship between Ash and Meghan is sweet and beautiful and heart warming. Add to it a jealous best friend Puck and you get a triangle. If you ask me well i'm Team Ash from the first instance. He is tall, he is dark, he is icy and with those silver eyes what is not to like? His feud with Puck was a nice twist in the story. Puck according to me is more of a loyal best friend instead of a love interest.

As far as the characters go - Ms. Kagawa had nailed them to the spot. Each portrayed a different characteristic and a provided a level of complexity to the plot. Our heroine, Meghan Chase is also fun to follow. She is strong, tentative and emotional, genuine enough. Puck as I already stated a goofball and Ash a forlorn gorgeous prince. Ms. Kagawa has indeed captured every curve and aspect needed to maintain such a humble rhythm on the plot.

The Iron King is a great promising start, with great characters, intriguing plot lines and devious tendencies. Oh hopefully i'll get to start THE IRON DAUGHTER soon.

Silas

Dogs are a man's best friend. A though astutely established by Robert J. Duperre in his book, Silas.

Here is the summary of the book:

Robert J. Duperre, author of The Fall and Dead of Winter, now presents Silas, a contemporary fantasy novel. Ken Lowery is a man at odds with his life. He hates his job, is disappointed in his marriage, and feels resigned to leading a mundane existence. That all changes when his wife brings home a rambunctious Black Labrador puppy named Silas, who forges a remarkable connection with Ken and begins to heal his inner turmoil. When some neighborhood children start to go missing, he takes it upon himself to protect those around him and is thrust into a surreal world where monsters roam. Not everything is what it seems to be, he soon discovers, including his new best friend.

As I just stated Dogs are a man's best friend, so its the case here. As titled SILAS, is actually the name of the Labrador and who definitely plays a pivotal role with the plot.

The book begins with Ken Lowery who is well at odds with his life and well bidding his last days on a hospital bed. Ken knows he doesn't have long to live but he also desires closure. Closure with what had happened to him in the past. Him and his faithful companion, Silas. Who had walked with him through his toughest times and even had gone to hell and had come back with him.

Try not to get confused by all this though - SILAS may revolve around the dog of the same name but yes the story also part paranormal and part post apocalyptic and dystopic. How?....Well read on....

SILAS, the book can be divided into two parts. The first part deals with the ups and downs of Ken's life on present day Earth. And the second part deals with his adventures in what would be a futuristic alternative reality to Earth, a place suffering from apocalyptic scenario where horrid creatures rule the land.

SILAS is a very moving book. While I admit its a little long but it serves its purpose nonetheless. Not only does it enforce the fact that our pets - well gi-faht (read the book you'll know what i'm talking about here)(well primarily dogs) not only being cute but also form a close bond with their masters but it also makes us wonder - 'What if there is really an alternate reality?' - I definitely don't have an answer to that but yes what I do know is Time is one element that is like a vast to ocean - much is still left to be explored.

It goes to the credit of the author that he had me captivated until the very end. Every pain and every moment of joy clearly resonates with us. Not only the beginning with the end also speaks volumes. Well for one Ken Lowery it was - life is too short to be a jerk for the whole while. But at the heart its a tale of growing up, and learning what is important in life and to value it.

Great job Mr. Duperre!

Pretty Deadly Reviews: Harry Potter Read - A - Long #2

First two week for re-reading Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone as part of the Harry Potter Read - A Long hosted by Pretty Deadly Reviews - oh it was just brilliant - all the memories - all the emotions

I even went and got myself the special edition DVDs of the first 5 movies.

But this post is for the question -

Q. What images would you see if you stumbled upon the Mirror of Erised whilst creeping the halls of Hogwarts after curfew?

Ans. Now that's personal that is....but yes i'd like to see myself happy in life and a successful animator as well as an author by hobby.

Follow Friday #4

"Follow Friday" is a weekly meme hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read. Thanks for stopping by and checking out my blog. Don’t forget to comment and leave your link so I can return your follows.

Q. If you could write yourself a part in a book, what book would it be and what role would you play in that book?

ANS. Now this is a difficult one to answer....well i'm an eclectic reader and I definitely love a diverse range of genres (excluding erotic that is) but yes my current favourite genre is YA dystopia and my all time favourite will always be the HARRY POTTER series.

So, yes I'd love a part written about me in the wizarding world....well what can I say I love all things magic...and I'll very much like to study at Hogwarts (sorry Durmstrang and Beauxbatons are not my thing). The magic wand, the racing Broomstricks and the magical Diagon Alley....OMG i'd love to visit and acquire these stuffs. And well don't you think our life may be so much easier with just a "swish and flick" of a wand?

On another note my current fav. genre is YA dystopia...inevitable enough these dystopic novels kinda somehow give these ideas where wrong choices lead to disasters in the future if we do not tread with caution. So, yes i'd like to also would love for a part to be written in a dystopic saga. Like the rebellious types - if something happens and I feel it should not be that way then to raise my voice against it and say "no" - so yes a YA dystopic heroine would also be good for me.

Shiewo: A Fantasy Flight to Adventure

Preferable for the 13 up group. I present before you all, Shiewo: A Fantasy Flight to Adventure by Ciye Cho.

Here is the summary of the book:

The universe of Orberana is a place of great wonder and peril, a dizzying landscape filled with clouds that can talk, clockwork beings that mark their own time, and painted animals that awake in the night. Shiewo Morose is the captain of a flying ship powered by music. She is also a determined young woman on a mission: a quest to find the Wishing Fish that created Orberana. Sailing above the clouds, Shiewo and her crew (Erduu the bamboo, Theo the cloud, Livingston the goldfish, and Felix the painter) are headed for worlds of crazed clockwork bureaucrats, tyrannic kings, and tornado children--worlds that will test not only the crew's bravery... but their very understanding of adventure. Theirs is the odyssey of a lifetime...

It is a world full of colours that come in every shade and form....well I suppose it correctly assumes the fat that the world which we are about to enter is well weird to a T...but it is also the land of dreams for any fantasy lovers.

Our story begins with Felix, a young artist in Galvanary (weird name for a city) who tries everything within his reach to turn his little world in the smog filled city a bit colourful via his art and his colours. One day his life suddenly takes a complete u-turn. His encounters with a cloud, a bamboo man and a ship captain with an attitude changes it all. He goes after them cause they have stolen something that belongs to him....his roof seriously (o.O) but all this goes down the drain when he finds the reason why they wanted his roof. They want to find the originator of Orbenara a.k.a. the wishing fish.

But that is not all, their ship with which they hope to track this mythical creature is shaped as a fish and the strangest detail of all....it runs with music (hmm....nice use of the physics of sound..impressive)

While this is just the beginning - a start to their adventure but yes more is to come and with each bounding task, they grow stronger and wiser.

All in all not bad - although i got bored through it a bit. maybe the reason being that the story is meant for adults or young adults for that matter. But yes the author Ciye Cho does a good job with it - very imaginative - very colourful - and very musical. Kids will definitely enjoying this adventure of a "different" kind.

WWW: #3 Wonder

Common among trilogies, the first, i.e., the introductory both as it sets the foundation of the series is the greatest and the final book serves as a mind-blasting ending to the series and the middle one serves as the balancing act but Robert J. Sawyer's WWW series breaks these norms. Lets hear for the final book of the WWW trilogy, Wonder.

Here is the summary of the book:

Webmind-the vast consciousness that spontaneously emerged from the infrastructure of the World Wide Web-has proven its worth to humanity by aiding in everything from curing cancer to easing international tensions. But the brass at the Pentagon see Webmind as a threat that needs to be eliminated. Caitlin Decter-the once-blind sixteen-year-old math genius who discovered, and bonded with, Webmind-wants desperately to protect her friend. And if she doesn't act, everything-Webmind included-may come crashing down.

As with the previous WWW book, Wonder takes off just as Watch finishes. While a pilot attempt to eliminate Webmind, the sentient A.I. of the world wide web by the agency WATCH may have been foiled and webmind may be safe for the time being but the humans have a long way to go before they can actually believe its worth.

Wonder....well the book title may not really say what it is about but after its two excellent predecessors - Wake & Watch - Wonder can be seen as the one where all the loose ends meet.

Webmind is doing wonders imaginable...I suppose that might be where the title comes from; cures for dangerous diseases, routing corrupt governments, keeping tabs over criminal activities. Webmind sure is going the way for a Nobel Peace Prize and he definitely gets it at the end.

While Caitlin and her family as well as Matt while supporting him (webmind) face problems of their own. As well as Hobo and his caretakers & the Chinese Wong Wai-Jeng are fighting their own battles. And well Colonel Peyton Hume has for a lack of a better word...gone rogue.

After Wake and Watch a lot would feel 'how much more can you give after such amazing two book?' Well Wonder may not exactly have any of them but it is the ideology that matters and the author shows his via Webmind. And I still haven't grasped the concept of 'Game Theory'. As the previous two installments, the characterization of the book goes like - its top notch. They are all very vivid and dynamic. It is very easy to get along with them, especially Webmind. It is a good thing that Robert J. Sawyer did not make it into a dystopia - we already have a lot of them in the market at present - we don't need more; WWW is strangely optimistic, maybe the human race have hope after all.

Q. How has your reading habits changed since you were a teen? or If you are still a teen what new genres are you in love with currently?

Ans. Well technically I'm still got one or two years more as a teen. So I'll go like this - my reading experience began with fairytales, then I movied onto Nancy Drew, Famous Five, Secret Seven and the Hardy boys......all this is great but my actual reading experience began with Harry Potter series by the one and only J K Rowling. Yes well when my sojourn with the Potter saga began - it was one book per year, i.e., every day I got one book in the series. Not the real trouble began after the I completed reading THE DEATHLY HALLOWS when it released. I literally was lost...had simply no idea as to what I would do now.....what to read now.

So I turned to Jane Austen and all the other classic works. In which cases Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, Emma and Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen, Homer's Odyssey and The Iliad and The Secret Garden were my favourite. And not to forget The Chronicles of Narnia and the Lord of the Rings too...definitely can't forget them.

Then as time went by Twilight as a motion picture was released and I got to know that its a four book series and was different from your normal burning in the sun type vampire saga...I decided why not try it out. Their is no harm in tying new things. And I loved it...the whole series in fact. I'm not ashamed to say that I was one of those that were obsessed with the series. But good enough for me it lasted only two years in my case....well the obsession part of the deal. Afterwards I saw a lot of Vampire-human romance sagas....from where I got to dystopias and urban romances. Thus, effectively turning me into an eclectic reader (at present).

Q. Talk about the book that most changed or influenced your life (was it a book that turned you from an average to avid reader, did it help you deal with a particularly difficult situation, does it bring you comfort every time you read it?).

ANS. Well I might sound like a obsessive girl but i's say it was the HARRY POTTER series by Jo Rowling that changed my life...or more preciously turned me into a book junkie....and that is definitely not a bad thing I tell you, it definitely isn't. Before Harry Potter was introduced to me I wasn't really into books - one or two a year were fine then and I mostly used to read fairytales, Enid Blyton or Nancy Drew. But the wizarding world really changed my life. Harry's world maybe fiction but it brought to life every other imagination of us muggles ;-) ..... but the one most important thing that it taught me was the lesson about friendship - well if you have friends like Ron and Hermione who are ready to go the end of the world with you.....well damn your lucky :-)

Keeping Grace Alive

I love a good thriller but it is a good senile thriller that I prefer much better than the all around actions. So here I present my views of Keeping Grace Alive by Annie Lee.

Here is the summary of the book:

Rudy Talbot, head of one of America's largest organized crime rings, hires his main hit man, Jessie Conners, to kill his step-daughter Grace. Jessie Conners is a seasoned hitman who has never missed a hit before. That is, until he met "Gracie" five years ago and fell in love with her. Gracie is a rebellious socialite in her mid-twenties. Refusing to marry the current Senator's son, Phillip Proctor, Gracie stands in the way of Rudy Talbot and his political dreams. Rudy knows both Jessie and Phillip have feelings for Gracie. Attempting to play the two men off of each other, Rudy's plan backfires when Jessie stages an abduction to whisk Gracie to safety. But Conner's had no idea that falling in love with Gracie would lead to the seemingly impossible task of keeping Gracie alive as her own medical conditions and step-father threaten her every move. Hiding her in his Pocono Mountain cabin, it soon becomes apparent that the only person who can keep Gracie alive is herself. And the only thing that guarantees her safety, going back and facing her past, will most likely get her killed. Jessie Conners goes against everything he knows in a struggle to save the love of his life. Suspense, mystery, and romance await readers of Keeping Grace Alive.

While thriller is maybe a form of fiction that well explains the idea of adrenalin rush but it is adrenalin rush in more way than the action aspect of a thriller novel.

The story picks up with Jessie Conners is a seasoned hitman who has never missed a hit before of Rudy Talbot, one of the most ruthless head of one of America's largest organized crime rings. He hires Jessie to remove his pesky rebellious step-daughter Grace "Gracie" Talbot out of his forever. For refusing to marry the current senator's son she stands in his way of his political gains. Jessie on the other hand has his own agenda at hand. At the previous three attempts Jessie had purposely botched them. Why? Simple he loves her....he fell for her five years prior at a chanced meeting.

But Rudy may be onto something this time. He even has something of his own planned out. Jessie is down to the last straw. This may be the last chance to save Gracie. And yes Rudy's plan to play off Jessie and the senator's son knowing both to have feeling her backfires when Jessie stages an abduction and takes off with Gracie to safety. What follow is a turn of events...well you can say roller coaster ride of emotions and circumstances that lead to the conclusion that only Jessie can keep her safe....and well step-up to the ultimatum if he wants that safety to be prolonged.

Keeping Grace Alive is the first of the Pocono Mountains series and it is well written. While a lot of things at first may seem impractical and fictitious but when you come to think about it you'd say...'well there are exceptions to the rule....come on imagine a huge, 6 foot plus black guy who cries at Hallmark commercials...kinda sounds ridiculous but there are exceptions. So it works for me.

If the relationship between Jessie and Grace be mentioned. Well I'd say they make a unique pair. A lot of the readers might connect them to Shakespeare's starcrossed couple Romeo and Juliet but I won't compare them to that - well melodrama (Well Jessie and Gracie do get a happy ending while Shakespeare's pair get not a kind happy ending but peace I suppose). Every interaction between them is endearing and sweet and up to a certain extent sensual. Jessie maybe this big bad hit man but he falls deeply in love with this fragile woman and completely submits himself to her. He's also not ashamed to tell her that he loves her from the moment he saw her, and gives her a chance to see if she feels the same.

Also as I had already mentioned before and i'll say it again - it is well written. The biggest complement an author expects is that his/her readers are able to connect to her writing and enjoy the tale. So, in context i'd like to congratulate Miss Annie Lee for a job well done.

Legacy: #1 Legacy

My...Historical Fiction after so long! Here it is Legacy by Cayla Kluver.

Here is the summary of the book:

I noticed his eyes. They were blue, sharp and intense. Despite the youthful glows of his suntanned face, his eyes were cold and unfriendly, suggesting he had great experience in the world and was now expecting the worst. In her seventeenth year, Princess Alera of Hytanica faces one duty: to marry the man who will be king. But her father's choice of suitor fills her with despair. When the palace guard captures and intruder—a boy her age with steel-blue eyes, hailing from her kingdom's greatest enemy—Alera is alarmed…and intrigued. But she could not have guessed that their clandestine meetings would unveil the dark legacy shadowing both their lands. In this mystical world of court conspiracies and blood magic, loyalties will be tested. Courage won't be enough. And as the battle begins for everything Alera holds dear, love may be the downfall of a kingdom.

Historical Fiction may not necessarily be all things history but it is taking a small aspect of the past and developing your views based on the facts employed. Our main view point of the story is based in the land of Hytanica in the medieval era. A time of Kings and Queens, of Knights and of Earls and of all things circa 1700s and 1800s.

On one hand is the kingdom of Hytanica where women are submissive, it is the men who are the most important decision making powers and on the other hand it is the kingdom of Cokyri, where women hold the highest position in the social status. Both Hytanica and Cokyri are as different from one another as black is from white. From the comparison only it is easy enough to understand that Hytanica has a long and brutal past with the Kingdom of Cokyri, and while there was peace between the two lands for the past years 16 years, things are now starting to shake and storm cloud are looming the horizon again.

Legacy takes off with the oldest princess of Hytanica, Alera and her personal bodyguard, London (its a name not the actual place in U.K. mind you) as they go for her rendezvous with her suitor the Lord Steldor (son of the captain of the guard). Princess Alera is about to make the most important decision of her life, her 18th birthday is fast approaching and within this period she must choose a husband or the King, her father would have to for her. But she is in a fix while her only suitor may be well loved by both family and country alike but Alera doesn't think Steldor is the one for her.

Then, if luck would have it she meets the mysterious Narian, a boy her age with steel-blue eyes, hailing from her kingdom's greatest enemy. Alera finds herself strangely attracted to this mysterious stranger. This chance meeting with a complete stranger may have been the precursor of clandestiny of events leading to the unveiling of a dark Legacy surrounding both Hytanica and Cokyri. Courage may simply not be enough for loyalties matter above all else.

Legacy is Miss Kluver's debut novel and I have to say its good enough to be on my favourite list. And Oh My God! I simply love the cover....its Gorgeous. History by definition is well.....boring but thankfully that is not the case here. Miss Kluver should be applauded for not only Legacy being an easy read but it being also beautifully written. Every detail....every minutes facts exert to beauty the era; emotions and turn of events are as well clearly felt by us readers.

While I did not like how the ending turned out but Miss Kluver you are now on of my favourite authors and I am very much excited for the next installments, Allegiance and Sacrifice.
