House of Ivy & Sorrow

Presenting House of Ivy & Sorrow by Natalie Whipple.

Here is the summary of the book:

Josephine Hemlock has spent the last 10 years hiding from the Curse that killed her mother. But when a mysterious man arrives at her ivy-covered, magic-fortified home, it’s clear her mother’s killer has finally come to destroy the rest of the Hemlock bloodline. Before Jo can even think about fighting back, she must figure out who she’s fighting in the first place. The more truth Jo uncovers, the deeper she falls into witchcraft darker than she ever imagined. Trapped and running out of time, she begins to wonder if the very Curse that killed her mother is the only way to save everyone she loves.

A fast read, with an interesting premise and some intense witchy action. Natalie Whipple is improving with each book. I liked her book 'Transparent'. If you found that amazing (like I did) then be prepared to be vowed by House of Ivy & Sorrow because this is exquisite.

A cute little paranormal romance, with some refreshing characters and some amazing spell works. Witches have been a part of the genre since long and authors alike have represented them in more ways than one. Likewise Whipple's witches are a force to be reckoned with. They are of Hemlock lineage and you don't want to underestimate them. Not one bit.

Josephine Hemlock. Our protagonist. She comes from a long line of witches and is a very powerful witch. Her mother dies from a dark curse, so now it's just her grandmother with her..... And you just can't help not love her. She is compassionate, spunky and has got quite the attitude. Juggling the normal world and her paranormal world, she is is in no way a boring character at all.

Witches are not aloud to tell outsiders about their powers or in anyway includes them in their activities. So it is pretty interesting to watch Jo juggle a double life. Keeping secrets from her friends while trying to keep them safe. Then there is her first boyfriend to deal with too and to figure out how this girlfriend - boyfriend works.

Speaking of the boyfriend, Winn is the cutest one even. He is charming, passionate, hardworking and mysterious. His personality is enough to make us love him and root from Jo and him to be together. While the romance is lite, Jo and Winn though make a very cute couple. I loved how they both tried to make this work and were there for the other when the situation called for it.

A wonderful and fresh tale. House of Ivy & Sorrow is quite the easy read. Accomplished with some lovable characters and kick-ass witches protected their loved ones and their land from the usurpers. Natalie Whipple did a marvelous job with this book and I am definitely excited to see what she comes up with next.
