The Girl & the Machine

Presenting The Girl & the Machine by Beth Revis.

Here is the summary of the book:

This short story follows Franklin, a time traveler with limited abilities: He can only travel into the past within his own lifetime. And then a girl shows up in his life. She claims to have met a future version of himself, and that the machine she invented will help him to go anywhere in the past or the future without limitations. When Heather shows Franklin the machine, she ensures him that they will change the world together and make it a better place. But Franklin can't help but feel a little ominous about it all...

PLEASE NOTE: This short story is a part of the larger collection of short stories by Beth Revis, entitled THE FUTURE COLLECTION.

Beth Revis strikes again ...... I don't usually post reviews of short stories in general. As an anthology mostly but not a single story per say .... but this one ..... this one serves a mention. I loved Revis' 'Across the Universe' trilogy and her latest 'The Body Electric' so I decided to try this one out as well and see what it was about. I always believe that the mettle pf an author can be proved if he/she can write a convincing or say perfectly jaw-dropping short (anyone can write long novels with the right ideas) .... So I am happy to report that my belief in Revis' penmanship remains intact.

Without trying to give anything away this short introduces two unique characters Franklin and Heather. Franklin is the guy with the ability to time travel but he can only ever visit the past and never the future. Heather is the studious science student who professes to help him try to travel tot he future. Short stories don't really take the time on character development but morals they depict. We all aspire to something in the future. It is a common thought that the past is excusable and the present is all that matters but what they forget is that be it past, present or future, it is our choices and actions that make us who we are.

Seriously I was not expecting this story to be so dark and astonishing towards the end. When I began it, I thought it was just an everyday sci-fi but I am glad it proved me wrong. Worthy of note is my reaction throughout - (just like many of you have read it) ..... "Ok" ...... "Interesting" ...... "Ok looks solid" ..... "now skeptical" ..... "eye-brows raised in a frown" ...... "OMG" ....... "WOW" ...... "O. M. Freaking. G" ....... Jaw-dropping awesome ..... was not expecting it to go in such a direction ....... BRAVO BETH ..... BRAVA!

The Body Electric

Presenting The Body Electric by Beth Revis.

Here is the summary of the book:

The future world is at peace.

Ella Shepherd has dedicated her life to using her unique gift—the ability to enter people’s dreams and memories using technology developed by her mother—to help others relive their happy memories.

But not all is at it seems.

Ella starts seeing impossible things—images of her dead father, warnings of who she cannot trust. Her government recruits her to spy on a rebel group, using her ability to experience—and influence—the memories of traitors. But the leader of the rebels claims they used to be in love—even though Ella’s never met him before in her life. Which can only mean one thing…

Someone’s altered her memory.

Ella’s gift is enough to overthrow a corrupt government or crush a growing rebel group. She is the key to stopping a war she didn’t even know was happening. But if someone else has been inside Ella’s head, she cannot trust her own memories, thoughts, or feelings.

So who can she trust?

We asked and she answered. Beth Revis enamored us with her sci-fi dystopia series, Across the Universe. We asked for more and she answered, while Amy & Elder were on Godspeed this here is what was happening on Earth. Across the Universe showed us life in space in an ingenious made up colony aboard a space ship and The Body Electric shows a utopian Earth with chaos hanging just round the corners..... Of course this is a standalone and you don't really have to read Across the Universe series to read this.

And Beth Revis went all out. She held nothing back. There is a level of details prevalent, be it the world building, the plot or the characterization. Be it Malta itself or the fictional New Venice, its quirks and its opulence, the finesse is there. Revis mentions that the world building is inspired by her travels and we can find no fault with that claim. Vivid and exotically conditioned you can just about construct every detail in your mind and there it will be with you a long while.

Characters too play their parts well. Well fleshed and equally heart-rendering, each of them bring something new. Be it the humans or the androids. They all held their personalities and they each held a unique spot. Truly Ella was the cream on the top. Ingeniously fleshed out and highly relatable and rather unreliable too. A higher degree of vulnerability, she just fights on. Be it the loss of her father, her mother's terminal illness, or Jack. She feels them all very deeply. And you just can't help but read on.

Ella & Jack are definitely the apple of our eyes. The romance may play a key role to the story but it is safely held in the corners, important but not all consuming. With a past shrouded among layers and layers of secrets, an obsession for answers is not far behind. There are not many authors who can hide such truths and keep us tethered till the end and keep us invested in the lives of these refreshing characters.

There is a marked improvement. While Across the Universe held its own mysterious peculiarities and its eccentricities, The Body Electric is a virtual treasure trove of creativity. Revis' world isn't new but all of the allusions to some of the mainstream pop culture and it is very much her own. Twists & turns, and secrets, unexpected truths and whatnot. Read it folks, just give this a read. Highly recommended.

Across The Universe #3 Shades of Earth

This was a long time coming..... definitely worth it. Presenting Across the Universe #3 Shades of Earth by Beth Revis.

Here is the summary of the book:

Amy and Elder have finally left the oppressive walls of the spaceshipGodspeed behind. They're ready to start life afresh--to build a home--on Centauri-Earth, the planet that Amy has traveled 25 trillion miles across the universe to experience.

But this new Earth isn't the paradise Amy had been hoping for. There are giant pterodactyl-like birds, purple flowers with mind-numbing toxins, and mysterious, unexplained ruins that hold more secrets than their stone walls first let on. The biggest secret of all? Godspeed's former passengers aren't alone on this planet. And if they're going to stay, they'll have to fight.

Amy and Elder must race to discover who--or what--else is out there if they are to have any hope of saving their struggling colony and building a future together. They will have to look inward to the very core of what makes them human on this, their most harrowing journey yet. Because if the colony collapses? Then everything they have sacrificed--friends, family, life on Earth--will have been for nothing.

FUELED BY LIES.
RULED BY CHAOS.
ALMOST HOME.

Few things check out when I started to read this book..... Long time coming - check. As amazing as ever plot - check. Beth Revis working her magic - check. But the cover (while brilliant in its own way) just ruined me collection.... OK YES I have the whole thing in my ebook library but .... seriously though re-designing it when they release the finale of the series in just plane cruel..... They could have re-printed the whole series after this book came out...... Seriously I want my Amy and Elder on this cover too (would love the UK cover most).....

So, Centauri-Earth in infront of them. Amy and Elder are ready to finally be free from Godspeed and finally see the planet they were set to colonize.... albeit way later than they were meant to. All the cryo chambers are unfrozen... But a quiet planet with its Earth like atmosphere, scenic mountains and two vibrant suns is a fresh danger zone with disaster waiting to happen.... a big secret lies beneath the surface of this new planet and it is something nobody actually anticipated ever. FREX MY MIND IS ON LOCKDOWN.

Beth Revis strikes again..... FREX this is BRILLY.... Amy and Elder..... they were endearing and adorable. The world building or most appropriately updating and progressing is successfully done. This was the certain quality of this series that makes it stand out from the crowd..... She treats and goes with each book and they are well enough to be stanalone if not fir some development that connects with the preceding books.

Shades of Earth..... was definitely a game changer and it was like entering a whole new world..... In a way it bares a lot of similarity with a lot of new age futuristic sci-fi dystopia shows and tales...... but take a chill pill people, Shades.. has its own shades of brilly action and revelation that might shake the ground you are standing on.....

And I loved the way Amy and Elder band together to solve the mystery of this alien planet that is in more ways than one just like our home. There is a deep rooting intensity between them and it is enough to send us over the edge about the fate of these two at the end of the book only to leave a sigh of relief that everything may not be the same anymore but it is finally changing for the better one step at a time...... Authors can be so evil sometimes but it is why we love them so much..... FREX THIS IS SAD..... I'M GOING TO MISS THIS SERIES SO MUCH....

"Shades of Earth, adds its own shades to this FREXING BRILLY piece of literature from our very own Beth Revis"

Across The Universe #2 A Million Suns

God I hate my long pile of to-be-read books...made me wait to read this wonderful book for so long. My views for the wonderfully written sequel, Across the Universe #2 A Million Suns by Beth Revis.

Here is the summary of the book:

Godspeed was once fueled by lies. Now it is ruled by chaos. It’s been three months. In that time, Amy has learned to hide who she is. Elder is trying to be the leader he’s always wanted to be. But as the ship gets more and more out of control, only one thing is certain: They have to get off the ship.

Godspeed is fueled by lies but now its chaos. Things are deteriorating. Since Eldest died and Elder took control of the ship, he discontinued the use of Phydus and gave back free will to the people on board. Resulting in the crew on board moving towards a constant state of entropy without any checks. Rebellion, constant fights, food shortage, work force strike, stampedes have become the order of the day.

Amidst  all this Amy and Elder race to uncover the truth that had been hidden since the plague elder more precisely since the Elder system began and uncover the truth hidden deep with the many layers of the ship. Also try to find the reasons as to why Godspeed hasn't reached Centauri-Earth yet and why the engines aren't working properly. But most importantly why had Orion left all these clues littered about and why call Amy his contingency plan. Maybe it is time they break free of the bondage that is Godspeed and search the million suns for answers.

The character development is marvelous. We see Elder truly struggling with his duties. Since the plague the people have been under the effects of Phydus and taking them off it in an instant and not getting them transitioned slowly to it and you can't just expect the people to listen pertaining to the paradigm shift, and hope that they would go with it.

Amy is facing problems of her own. Out of all the interracial dark skinned inhabitants of the ship she is the odd one out, the freak as they had labelled her. Orion has left her clues to the mystery that is Godspeed. Also the narrative of the plot is well placed, with every chapter alternating between Amy and Elder's POVs, spring twists after twists upon us anticipating readers as one by one the deep layers of Godspeed are unveiled and Amy and decide that they must get off that ship if they ever want to get to their destination.

It is said that book 2s in a series are a way to bridge the gap between the first book and the epic finales but here it is not so. Beth Revis delivers a powerfully compact next chapter in the life of Amy and Elder on the ship that brought them together.

Now, i'm sure you all remember I had an interview with Beth Revis last year (don't remember? Click Here), and she mentioned two mistakes that shape this book, now I have to read book one again to make a head or tail of it. But what a sequel it was...oh I need SHADES OF EARTH and I need it now....GOD THIS WAIT WOULD BE AGONY.

"Best sequel ever!"

bethrevis.blogspot.com - Show gratitude for books

As part of entering for the thanksgiving giveaway Ms. Beth Revis is hosting. I would like to present the book I want to show my gratitude for.

I know I am going to sound overrated with my obvious answer but the one book that I'd like to thank would be Cinder & Ella by Melissa Lemon (check my review here). Well besides the fact that this is a re-telling of Cinderella's fairytale, it also explains a lot of things in our life and expresses their importance.

It emphasizes on most definitely tree but also the importance of family in an individual's life and would highly recommend everyone to read it.

Across The Universe: #1 Across The Universe

I’m always partial to books with attractive covers……As such attractive covers help to attract public. Thus I came across this new and wonderfully scientific novel or should I say the debut sci-fi dystopic Across The Universe by Beth Revis. And it was an awesome change to read such a well written futuristic dystopian novel. Mind you this is only the beginning. Two more books are left in this trilogy.
Here is how the summary goes like:
A love out of time. A spaceship built of secrets and murder. Seventeen-year-old Amy joins her parents as frozen cargo aboard the vast spaceship Godspeed and expects to awaken on a new planet, three hundred years in the future. Never could she have known that her frozen slumber would come to an end fifty years too soon and that she would be thrust into the brave new world of a spaceship that lives by its own rules. Amy quickly realizes that her awakening was no mere computer malfunction. Someone—one of the few thousand inhabitants of the spaceship—tried to kill her. And if Amy doesn’t do something soon, her parents will be next. Now Amy must race to unlock Godspeed’s hidden secrets. But out of her list of murder suspects, there’s only one who matters: Elder, the future leader of the ship and the love she could never have seen coming.

Across The Universe is such a fantastic read, and one I became so fascinated with, that I read it in one sitting. Beth Revis has done an excellent job at writing a story that has left me wondering, “What if.” She weaves together an awesome murder-mystery, sci-fi, dystopian thriller with a bit of romance and all confined within the walls of Godspeed.
Godspeed. Well Godspeed is massive. So massive, it’s a feat of the mind to imagine the whole thing, complete with pastures of grazing cows, a city meant to hold thousands, and any number of nooks and special rooms designed for keeping secrets — for centuries. And yet, even at that phenomenal size, the oppressiveness is tangible.
It starts on with Amy being cryogenically frozen with her parents. Her parents are kind of a big deal and they are to be sent off to a new habitable planet which will take 300 years to get to so they will be frozen in the mean time. Amy is nonessential to the mission but she wants to go with her parents. What she doesn’t expect is to wake up on the ship with fifty years until landing while every one else remains frozen. And the reason she woke up is that some one unplugged her. She barely survived. She was only the first but now others are being unplugged and they are dying. She needs to figure out who the murderer is while also trying to acclimate to life on the Godspeed.
Life on the ship is not what Amy expects. Everyone is mono-ethnic which makes her stand out and the people on the ship seems to act like a heard of sheep. Following blindly to a cult like society where everything is controlled and regulated. Amy is seen as a freak with her pale skin, green eyes and red hair. Her only friends are Harley who resides in the mental ward and Elder the boy who is the future leader of the ship.
Knowing nothing of how or why, she can think of only one thing: someone tried to kill her. Her doubts are suddenly confirmed as more frozen people are awakened and, not as lucky as her, found dead in their thawed chambers. Elder is part of the crew that has been running Godspeed since the beginning of its journey. Generations upon generations of his people have worked and lived within the confines of the ships metal walls, each generation lead by one leader, Eldest, and Elder is the next leader in training. Once Amy awakens, Elder is fascinated by her, by her pale skin, red hair and green eyes, but most of all by all her ideas, her knowledge, her way of seeing things coming from a world that he has never known.
Together with Elder and Harley, they try to unravel the mystery of the people dying, while at the same time Amy tries to: understand a society that makes no sense to her, that feels wrong and controlling and full of lies; find a murderer; and cope with the fact that the next time she will see her parents she’ll be about 70 years old. And Elder starts to realize that everything he knows might be a lie, not knowing what is true, what is fabricated, what is wrong and what is right.
Both Amy and Elder spend a lot of time being led and manipulated, rather than strongly directing their own paths, but I don’t think this shows weak characterization on their parts. They’re part of a web of lies and secrets so much bigger than themselves, what we’re seeing seems authentic. What makes them strong is their internal resilience. Even though they can’t control their destinies, they can fight.
“Eldest thinks power is control, that the best way to be a leader is to force everyone into obedience. Holding Amy against me, I realize the simple truth is that power isn’t control at all-power is strength, and giving that strength to others. A leader isn’t someone who forces others to make him stronger; a leader is someone willing to give his strength to other so that they may have the strength to stand on their own. This is what I’ve been looking for since the first day I was told that I was born to lead this ship. Leading Godspeed has nothing to do with being better than everyone else, with commanding and forcing and manipulating. Eldest isn’t a leader. He’s a tyrant. A leader doesn’t make pawns-he makes people.”
The dual narrative was great in this book. I like knowing what the characters are thinking and it was especially nice to read about the same event from two perspectives. I was able to see Godspeed and its inhabitants as an outsider and also as their future leader. This allowed for me to care about the people but also see their dark side. There was a scene that I almost put the book down because I was literally scared and disgusted but it showed how inhuman people can become.

The story kept me interested and eager to discover Godspeed’s secrets. I admit, I wanted Amy to finally notice how awesome Elder is but the story also kept me reading. I love when books shock me, and this one has a few twists that left me reading with my mouth open in shock.
Across the Universe felt both slow-paced and fast-paced to me. I would come up for air, realize that I was half-way done with the book, but at the same time, wondering why not much had happened. It is because Revis trickles her clues and mysteries slowly through her story, little by little, not holding anything back, but not given away too much too fast until the very end of the book. Also the element of claustrophobia in the ship- from the air to the populace in the ship is palpable. But also from space itself, an infinite, inhospitable vastness all around you. It’s a weight that is always there when you’re reading the book. There is nowhere to run, that is one of the more scarier concepts I’ve read in a long time. I will most definitely keep reading the series, it’s too good and too unique to pass up.
