Lunar Chronicles #2 Scarlet

Re-imagined fairytales ..... a perfect work. Presenting Lunar Chronicles #2 Scarlet by Marissa Meyer.

Here is the summary of the book:

The fates of Cinder and Scarlet collide as a Lunar threat spreads across the Earth...

Cinder, the cyborg mechanic, returns in the second thrilling installment of the bestselling Lunar Chronicles. She's trying to break out of prison—even though if she succeeds, she'll be the Commonwealth's most wanted fugitive.

Halfway around the world, Scarlet Benoit's grandmother is missing. It turns out there are many things Scarlet doesn't know about her grandmother or the grave danger she has lived in her whole life. When Scarlet encounters Wolf, a street fighter who may have information as to her grandmother's whereabouts, she is loath to trust this stranger, but is inexplicably drawn to him, and he to her. As Scarlet and Wolf unravel one mystery, they encounter another when they meet Cinder. Now, all of them must stay one step ahead of the vicious Lunar Queen Levana, who will do anything for the handsome Prince Kai to become her husband, her king, her prisoner.

Fairytales hold a special place in our lives. Be it for a boy or a girl, we spend a considerable part of our childhood reading, listening and even fantasizing about Snow White, Rapunzel, about the happily ever after, about Prince Charming .... even about how cool till will be to fight an actual fire-breathing dragon or  get our wishes granted by fairies. It is safe to say at one time or another all we would think of are these fairytales. Now in this new age authors are coming out with fresh ideas for books, renovating everyday.

One of these new age reinvention is re-imagining fairytales and classics. Mixing and whipping up something new from an already famous and well to do tale for tv or the movie is hard enough but doing the same for book is near enough impossible and if the author is not eloquent or imaginative enough to put his/her ideas to the masses then I'd say they need to find another genre. Till date there has been many a authors producing re-imaginations of already famous fairytales and classics and making it their own with their fresh ideas added to the mix...... And Marissa Meyer's Lunar Chronicles fit the bill of a successful re-imagining rather perfectly.

Marissa Meyer first wowed us with CINDER. A futuristic-dystopian re-imaging of Cinderella. Now she adds another successful re-imaging to the mix with SCARLET or might I say Little Red Riding Hood..... and not only does she successfully gave new meaning to this tale but she furthers Cinder's story too without it being incomplete in anyway.

This is as much Scarlet Benoit and Wolf's tale as is Cinder and Emperor Kai's. With Scarlet and Wolf we prowl the French countryside as she searches for her grandmother who has gone missing, the police won't help and Wolf is more than willing. They both start out suspicious of each other. While Scarlet's thoughts and feelings about the situation are blatantly obvious, what with the story being told in her perspective. She is head strong, pushy and likes to get the last word in. There is a degree of self-regulation in her which is rather endearing to watch. Wolf remains thoroughly mysterious throughout. He is wild, he is gruff, he is a brute, almost bordering on savage but something happens between the two and he becomes this calm and intense person who unnerves Scarlet in a very good way. There is a level of intensity that has us readers cross-fingers and wait for the reliever with their deep and hair-raising interactions.

For Kai and Cinder, well things are simply not good at all. We find Cinder is the fabled princess of Lunar and now she is in jail and Kai has been ladled with the responsibility of damage control and keeping the Lunar Queen at bay. A mission pretty hard for a young Emperor when he is not given much choices to work with.

While CINDER began with her and Kai, SCARLET introduces the titular character and Wolf and they were cleverly incorporated in the story. We are introduced to new characters but the original ones are there too..... And its not awkward at all. Ms. Meyer you do these fairytale classics justice. I definitely liked the fact that she didn't go all futuristic with the technical jargon and kept it all low key enough to give the story the chance to shine through..... Can't wait for Cinder's nest adventure with Cress..... seriously can't wait......
