Presenting The Heroes of Olympus #5 The Blood of Olympus by Rick Riordan.
Here is the summary of the book:
Though the Greek and Roman crewmembers of the Argo II have made progress in their many quests, they still seem no closer to defeating the earth mother, Gaea. Her giants have risen—all of them—and they're stronger than ever. They must be stopped before the Feast of Spes, when Gaea plans to have two demigods sacrificed in Athens. She needs their blood—the blood of Olympus—in order to wake.
The demigods are having more frequent visions of a terrible battle at Camp Half-Blood. The Roman legion from Camp Jupiter, led by Octavian, is almost within striking distance. Though it is tempting to take the Athena Parthenos to Athens to use as a secret weapon, the friends know that the huge statue belongs back on Long Island, where it "might" be able to stop a war between the two camps.
The Athena Parthenos will go west; the Argo II will go east. The gods, still suffering from multiple personality disorder, are useless. How can a handful of young demigods hope to persevere against Gaea's army of powerful giants? As dangerous as it is to head to Athens, they have no other option. They have sacrificed too much already. And if Gaea wakes, it is game over.

Demigods check. Dangerous quest check. Godly action check. End of the world prophecy check. Amazing characters check. Wittiness check ..... and end of an era check. ...... Players are lining up. Sides have been chosen. Threats and schemes thought up. After the serious and time exhaustive exhilarating adventure at the 'House of Hades', the demigods race against the hour to stop the big bad, Mother Earth from rising.
While it is tempting to take the 'Athena Parthenos' to Athens, if it could help against the forces of Gaea but they know its rightful place is in Long Island to help stave off war between the Greeks and the Romans. So they divide. Reyna, Nico and Coach Hedge decide to deliver the statue and the remaining Argo II crew head to Athens..... and coupled with Riordan's witty dialogues, the Blood of Olympus makes for an outstanding finale.
Divided like before into the different perspectives. We see Jason finally accepting his present and overcoming his past. Leo keeping his promise *wink* & Piper was simply kickass. Nico got his closure. Reyna also learnt to leave her past behind and sadly Percy & Annabeth turned out to be bait ... I think I would have given it a 5 star if Percy or Annabeth (or both) had their own POVs, I didn't really see them do much of anything than what we got to read from others..... they kept getting saved .... So call me what you want but 4 stars it is and no more.
The Blood of Olympus while it was a fitting finale, felt more of a Jason, Piper and Leo show. Of course I would also have loved to see a bit more prolonged battle against Gaea after she fully rose but what we saw worked well..... Ingenious really defeating her in that subtle way. Keeping true to the mythology and incorporating this epic journey, Rick Riordan definitely doesn't not disappoint. Of course i'll say again I would have given it 5 stars if we had seen Percy's POV but all said and done this is a great finale. It is now time to turn our attention to Riordan's upcoming series on Norse Mythology (which I am very excited for).
"A nerve-racking great end to this epic Greco-Roman conglomeration"

Rick Riordan is the best. I love his books. I have only read the original Percy Jackson series, but I want to read all the others too!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy Rick Riordan's books. Haven't quite read all the books in this series yet, so I have some to look forward to! Definitely think these books are better than the movies (unlike the Harry Potter movies which I thought were fantastic!).
