Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I'm a just a girl who lives in the country and writes books.
Q: When and How did you realize that you wanted to be a writer? And how did you decide upon sci-fi as your choice of genre?
I've wanted to be a writer for as long as I can remember; I distinctly recall writing "novels" in 5th grade. I'd never written sci fi before ACROSS THE UNIVERSE, though; I'd always written fantasy before. But the story I wanted to tell required a sci fi setting, so that's the story I wrote.
Q: Writing is said to be something that people are afflicted with rather than gifted and that it's something you have to do rather than want. What is your opinion of this statement?
I don't see it that way at all. I think of writing as a gift. Not that I'm gifted to be a writer, but that being able to fill your life with stories is a gift.
Q: Try to describe your book in one sentence.
Murder mystery in space.
Q: How do you research for a book before you being the writing process?
I researched enough to know why the things I needed--cryogenic freezing, interstellar space ships, etc.--didn't exist in our society today, then invented ways to make them work in the story.
Q: What is the best part of writing for you?
First drafting. I enjoy discovering the story.
Q: Did you always had in mind to be a writer or it just happened?
Always wanted to be a writer.
Q: Something special you want to share with us?
Um, well...the cover for A MILLION SUNS just came out! And the paperback cover for AtU!
Now some simple questions and more fun^^
-Your favourite books and author?
The Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis
-Your favourite band/singer?
Probably P!NK. And I have no problem saying I also think Selena Gomez is amazing.
-Twitter or Facebook?
I like them both for different reasons.
-Favourite place in the world?
London
-Last movie you watched at the cinemas?
X-Men: First Class
-The last book you’ve read?
The Name of the Star by Maureen Johnson (it is AMAZINGLY good)
-Have you ever googled yourself?
Yup! But I try not to get too caught up in numbers.
-If you wouldn’t be a writer, what you would be?
A teacher
-And last one....print or ebooks?
I love both for different reasons!
Q: When you sit down and write do you know how the story will end or do you just let the pen take you? ie Do you develop character profiles and outlines for your novels before writing them or do you let your idea's develop as you write?
I generally know an idea of how the book will end, but I don't know the details at all. I like to discover as I write, and I don't use outlines at all.
Q: How are similar are you from your main characters in Across the Universe?
I fashioned Amy's love and longing for her parents after my own feelings of missing them after going away to college. And Elder's desire to succeed mirrored my own desire to have a book published.
Q: Both 'Across the Universe' and 'A Million Suns' have a very eye catching cover. Did you have any input in it?
Thankfully, no! I ADORE the covers, but they're all from the Penguin Art Department.
Q: Are you allowed to tell us a little bit about 'A Million Suns'?
I can say that two things you think are true in ACROSS THE UNIVERSE are actually lies.
And Last,
Q: What advice would you like to give budding authors or those who want to start writing?
I did a whole post on that here: http://bethrevis.blogspot.com/2011/06/my-best-advice-for-teen-writers.html
(Click on any of the two book covers to access information about the books)
